New Study Shows New Ulm Residents Have Better Control of Blood Pressure and Cholesterol than Comparison Community

Findings from a study comparing several heart disease risk factors for New Ulm residents over a six-year period, since The Heart of New Ulm Project began, with those for residents from another Minnesota community show New Ulm residents are doing better in controlling their blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides. The study’s outcomes were presented during a poster session at the American Heart Association EPI/Lifestyle 2017 Scientific Sessions held in March 2017 in Portland, Ore.

New Ulm, MN – Sept. 7, 2016 – Hearts Beat Back®: The Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU), a 10-year project to reduce heart attacks in New Ulm, Minn., was featured this year at the Health Catalyst Annual Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. A 20-minute documentary was premiered at the event, highlighting the importance of the project from a national healthcare perspective. New Study In New Ulm to Explore Whether Adding Phone Coaching Can Improve Diabetes Care

Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project and the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation are pleased to announce a new study in partnership with New Ulm Medical Center. Researchers will study whether patients who receive education and phone counseling from a registered dietitian with diabetes expertise, in addition to care from their primary care physician, make greater improvements in their “D5” outcomes than those who don’t receive the additional education and counseling support.

Population Health Program Decreases Heart Disease Risk Factors Across An Entire Community

Results for the first five years have been released, and the initial findings are positive.
